15 -you o one?-
Nota d'usoCome pronome impersonale, one è molto più formale di you e tende a essere considerato arcaico e affettato: One needs to make an appointment if one wishes to see the minister, bisogna fissare un appuntamento se si vuole vedere il ministro. Nell'inglese attuale, si tende quasi sempre a preferire l'uso di you: You have to make an appointment if you want to see the doctor, bisogna prendere un appuntamento per vedere il dottore; You never know who's listening, non si sa mai chi sta ascoltando. -
16 see/think fit
(to consider that some action is right, suitable etc: You must do as you see fit (to do).) ritenere giusto -
17 see etc the last of
(to be finished with, be able to forget: You haven't heard the last of this!) liberarsi, (sentir parlare per l'ultima volta), (vedere per l'ultima volta) -
18 -to see-
Nota d'usoPer tradurre in inglese frasi italiane come “non ti vedo”, “mi vedi?” (nel senso di “riuscire a vedere”) bisogna usare il verbo to see insieme al modale can: I can't see you, non ti vedo; Can you see me?, mi vedi?I verbi di percezione come to see, to hear e to watch possono essere seguiti 1 dalla forma in - ing o 2 dall'infinito senza to.1 Si usa la forma in - ing per riferirsi ad azioni o eventi visti, sentiti ecc. non nella loro interezza: I saw her coming down the stairs, la vidi mentre scendeva le scale; She watched the children playing in the sand, guardò i bambini che giocavano nella sabbia; I could hear my sister singing, sentivo mia sorella cantare.2 Si usa l'infinito senza to per riferirsi a eventi o azioni brevi o istantanei, oppure dei quali si è visto, sentito ecc. tutto lo svolgimento: I saw him fall, lo vidi cadere; He watched them unload the truck, li guardò scaricare il camion; They heard the bell ring, sentirono suonare il campanello.Si confrontino:La a) significa che ho udito solo una parte del pezzo e può essere tradotta con l'ho sentita che suonava un brano di Mozart; la b) significa che ho sentito tutto il pezzo e si può rendere con l'ho sentita suonare (o eseguire) un brano di Mozart.Si confrontino ancora:c) I saw Dorothy marching down the corridor, ho visto Dorothy che percorreva a grandi passi il corridoio;d) I saw Dorothy march down the corridor, enter her room and slam the door shut, ho visto Dorothy percorrere a grandi passi il corridoio, entrare nella sua stanza e sbattere la porta. -

8) (indicating habitual event or behaviour in past: used to)••Note:When would is used with a verb in English to form the conditional tense, would + verb is translated by the present conditional of the appropriate verb in Italian and would have + verb by the past conditional of the appropriate verb: I would do it if I had time = lo farei se avessi tempo; I would have done it if I had had time = l'avrei fatto se avessi avuto tempo. - However, in sequence of past tenses and in reported speech, would + verb is translated by the past conditional of the appropriate Italian verb: I was sure you would like it = ero sicuro che ti sarebbe piaciuto (not "piacerebbe"); he said he would fetch the car = disse che avrebbe preso (not "prenderebbe") la macchina. - For more examples, particular usages and all other uses of would see the entry below* * *[wud]short forms - I'd; verb1) (past tense of will: He said he would be leaving at nine o'clock the next morning; I asked if he'd come and mend my television set; I asked him to do it, but he wouldn't; I thought you would have finished by now.) (ausiliare per la formazione del condizionale presente)2) (used in speaking of something that will, may or might happen (eg if a certain condition is met): If I asked her to the party, would she come?; I would have come to the party if you'd asked me; I'd be happy to help you.) (ausiliare per la formazione del condizionale presente)3) (used to express a preference, opinion etc politely: I would do it this way; It'd be a shame to lose the opportunity; I'd prefer to go tomorrow rather than today.) (ausiliare per la formazione del condizionale presente)4) (used, said with emphasis, to express annoyance: I've lost my car-keys - that would happen!)•- would-be- would you* * *[ forma debole wəd, forma forte wʊd]1) (in sequence of past tenses, in reported speech)if we'd left later we would have missed the train — se fossimo partiti più tardi avremmo perso il treno
after that I wouldn't eat any canned food — dopo quell'episodio, non ho più voluto saperne di mangiare cibo in scatola
5) (expressing desire, preference)we'd really love to see you — vorremo davvero vederti, abbiamo davvero voglia di vederti
would you like something to eat, some more tea? — vuoi qualcosa da mangiare, ancora del tè?
switch off the radio, would you? — spegneresti la radio?
- For more examples, particular usages and all other uses of would see the entry below
